Ladera, St Lucia

Over the next couple of weeks I won't be posting quite as often as I usually do, sorry. This is because I'm on holiday, currently residing at a hotel in St Lucia called Ladera. Alex and I are 1,083ft above sea level, sandwiched between the two volcanic plugs that are the Pitons.

The view from our room is quite spectacular.

This is our second visit to St Lucia. We wanted the holiday to include a few days of total relaxation before we head on to California next week for something a little more lively. The resort overlooks Jalousie Bay; a beautiful beach we visited back in 2009 when we were sat just a few feet away from a not necessarily 'with it' Amy Winehouse. I can't believe that was 5 whole years ago.

The hotel is somewhat unique in that it doesn't actually have a fourth wall; the front of the room is completely open and you have no choice but to try and sleep at night to the sound of crickets chirping, the breeze rustling the trees and in our case thus far, the pouring rain. There's hardly been any insects or creepy things to worry about though - just the odd little fly or tiny frog. It's all pretty cool really...like being one with nature.

We arrived on Thursday afternoon and we've not been particularly lucky with the weather. We've had a bit of sun but it's mainly been overcast and raining frequently. It won't dampen our spirits though and it's still a very satisfactory temperature at about 28 degrees.

Lack of sunshine aside, our holiday has so far been filled with all the best a Caribbean getaway has to offer - beautiful cocktails, great food, a friendly service and astonishing views.

The food in the hotel restaurant is made to a high standard and visitors from all over St Lucia come to eat at Dasheene.  To my early-morning delight, they made me a fantastic egg white omelette with goat's cheese and peppers (I love my breakfasts and I'm chuffed when an egg is done right!).

The grounds of Ladera are stunning and clearly well looked after. I'm a bit of a bird lover and I'm fascinated by the varieties here, especially the beautiful hummingbirds.

We haven't ventured out much; just wandered the grounds or lazed around reading books and sipping on fresh coconut water. We don't intend on doing much in the way of activites while we're here; we did all that last time we came so these six days are just for a full battery recharge!

Having said that, we're still trying to make our personal trainer proud and do a workout each day! There's a decent little gym on the grounds and we also brought the TRX along. We've been working hard on getting into shape recently so we thought we may as well try and keep it going...at least a little bit!

But with such a glorious variety of food and drink on offer, we're not holding back in the evenings. It's wonderful to sip on a cocktail in the bar as we watch the sun set between the Pitons then head up the restaurant's wooden steps for dinner. The ingredients are all locally sourced and today's Catch of the Day (King fish) was gorgeous.

There are a few small negatives about the place that I won't bore you with (except that it has the worst hotel shower EVER) but we're having such a great time so far and we've only just begun...

I shall be back in a couple of days to update you further. Hopefully I'll have more of a tan by then!

Have a fantastic weekend, everyone!

  24. I should not have looked at these pictures while we are having yet another dreary day in London. I'm so jealous! I love the unique place you're staying - I suppose it's safe enough there that you don't have to worry about anyone creeping in on you during the night?

Good for you taking off for somewhere warm and {sometimes} sunny, though. I'll remember to do that next year! ;o)

  25. I'm not a beach person, at all, but would LOVE this right about now, given the amount of snow we've been dealing with for the last 3 months!

  26. I my gosh ... what I would give to be there right now!!!
Last week we had -24°C for 4 days straight here in Canada - the sun & warm temperatures must be so lovely!
    Enjoy your vacation :)

  28. I'm from Trinidad, so not too far away from St. Lucia. I've actually been several times, but we stayed with friends and family. There are so many amazing eating places around the island...'local hot spots'. Next time you go, do let me know and I'll fill you in on the 'local' things to try. Ever had doubles? Americans who try it either love it or hate it. :)
