Sunshine On A Rainy Day

I've been doing my blog for a year and a half now. To my delight, it's given me more opportunities than I ever imagined to visit bars and restaurants all round London. Along the way I've sampled cocktails that were amazing (see my favourites here) and many that were just good to average. It's all very nice but now I want to be a little more fussy with my blog space.

I've decided to make it my aim to find something more original; venues doing their stuff a little differently. And would you believe it - I've already found one! Hurrah!

My visit wasn't sponsored. Earlier that week I'd seen a tweet stating that Craft Cocktail Company - located under an arch in Bethnal Green - were "now taking reservations". They concluded their tweet with the hashtag #DrinkCleanLiveFree. Interesting. Seeing as I was dining at Shoreditch restaurant Lyles that evening anyway, I booked myself a table for pre-dinner drinks. Before I knew it, it was a rainy Thursday and I was arriving at the bar somewhat harassed by the weather; umbrella dripping, hair windswept, mood: irritated. However, once I'd ordered myself a cocktail and settled onto my bright yellow bench my frame of mind improved as I felt I'd just been transported to a colourful beach bar. Some of my favourite Motown tunes were playing the background. I was suddenly detached from the grim weather going on behind me.

My cocktail arrived in a frosted ice-cold glass. The delightful Sunset Boulevard (gin, Aperol, aperitif liqueur, blood orange juice, hand-pressed lemon juice and acacia honey) was unbelievably refreshing and easy to drink; you could almost believe that it didn't have any alcohol in it at all.

So how is Craft Cocktail Company different?

Firstly, they are a factory as well as a bar. They have a production workshop out the back where the Craft flavourists (born from The London Cocktail Club) blend, carbonate and bottle their house cocktails all ready to serve to us thirsty people. And as they'll be bottled and ready to serve, that means no long wait for your cocktail! Of course they'll knock you up the classics too but I would definitely recommend trying their sparkling bottled cocktails - they're beautiful.

Secondly, everything is made by them using only the finest, fresh produce. No chemicals, additives or preservatives are used in the process. All their citrus fruits come from new Covent Garden Market and the herbs and spices are carefully sourced to make sure they are at their best all year round. These include Italian juniper, English lavender and Madagascan vanilla.

This will explain the genuine uniqueness and subtlety of their cocktails.

Craft Cocktail Company are not quite ready to open officially yet though! They have their food menu to finalise and a lot of bottles to fill...

Mary and I spent a super-relaxed couple of hours at Craft. Outside was raining but inside was sunny!

Mary told me all about the recent additions to her family - two adopted cats called Poppy and Sybil. As their honorary Auntie, I came armed with gifts. I love anything from Mungo & Maud! It's all so cute!

I'm sure I'll be waxing lyrical once Craft Cocktail Company have set a date for the grand opening. Their concoctions are something worth going back for and I'm excited to see what they do with the food menu. Plus the location is only a hop, skip and a jump from the foodie wonderland that is Shoreditch.

What with summer seemingly over, we'll no doubt all need a little bit of a Caribbean atmosphere in our lives! Just be wary of how drinkable these cocktails are; on an empty stomach they can go straight to your head.
